Dandruff is a common dermatological problem, being a source of discomfort for both men and women. Statistics show that over 70% of men face at some point with this condition, and for 10-20% of people aged between 18 and 40 years of dandruff is a permanent problem.

Dandruff is a form of skin problem, resulting in the removal of superficial layers of the epidermis. Depending on where you face dermatitis, dandruff is in the form of small dry scales (scalp shows no irritation or redness) or heavier and more dense scales (scalp is dotted with red spots).

Fungus Malassezia furfur, the main cause of dandruff

“The cause is the fungus Malassezia furfur, which feeds on the sebum from the sebaceous glands. The fungus, normally present on skin of any person, is involved in producing this disease. For those affected by the settlement is higher than that of healthy skin.

Other causes of dandruff is excessive secretion of sebaceous glands (oily scalp) and genetic inheritance. Also, hormonal disorders, strict diets or metabolic factors favoring the occurrence of dandruff, according to the specialist. In winter, the disease may become more severe and that’s because dry air and low temperatures. The skin becomes dry, itchy scalp causing peeling.

There are two types of dandruff:
* Dry dandruff. In this case, dandruff is caused by an acceleration of the scalp skin cell regeneration, which are pushed to the surface. In this case, the scales are observed in the hair and clothes;
* Dandruff fat. The cause is excess sebum and the hair often appears oily. It is easily recognizable because it is yellow and is glued to the scalp.

The severity of dandruff can be enhanced by factors such as excessive sweating, stress, cold weather, excessive use of hair sprays and gels, improper use of hair coloring products or using electric hair curling, hats and scarves, or inadequate rinsing.

Dandruff is a chronic disease with acute and relapse phases of improvement. But there are treatments that can monitor and control the dandruff. Treatment consists of using anti-dandruff shampoo, which can have active ingredient: zinc – pyrithion, selenium sulfide or ketoconazole.

It is recommended that the washing of the selected products to be made twice, and in the second wash, shampoo is left to act for 5 minutes and then rinse the hair thoroughly. Once an anti-dandruff shampoos do not yield results, should be replaced with another, which is preferable to have an active ingredient different from the previous.
